Running diagonally through the heart of Mexico City, the Paseo de la Reforma is the kind of arrow-straight, tree-lined, monument-strewn boulevard that travel writers are contractually required to describe as ‘Parisian’. For six and a half days each week, this grand avenue is soaked with cars, buses, vans and taxis, honking and weaving and running the lights. But from 8am until 2pm every Sunday, 12km of the Paseo is closed to motor traffic – and out come the city’s cyclists.

As with similar events we’ve enjoyed in other Latin American cities – Bogotá (where the idea originated), Medellín, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Quito – the main attraction of Mexico City’s ciclopaseo is the chance to cycle on streets free from traffic. The atmosphere at these closed-road mornings is invariably festive, and for good reason: riding a bike is fun. But these ciclopaseos are also a wonderful spectator sport, exhibiting a city’s cycling culture in all its glorious multitudes. From yesterday morning, here are some of our favourites.
