pikebook-534Sooner or later, every cyclist touring South America enjoys a virtual encounter with Neil and Harriet Pike. Enthusiasts and evangelists for high-altitude cycling, hiking and climbing, the British couple are responsible for Andes by Bike, a definitive database of mountain routes in Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina that’s become an online Bible for any cyclist passing through this most breathtaking of natural landscapes.

The Pikes have now put their knowledge to further good use with a new guidebook, which covers an array of hikes and bike rides in the spectacular Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash near Huaraz. We’ve yet to see a copy, but if it’s even half as useful as Andes by Bike, it’ll be indispensable for anyone visiting the region. Published by Trailblazer Guides, the book is available in all the usual shops and online outlets, but the best place to order a copy is the Pikes’ website. You can do so by clicking here.

foct-1024Two other British cyclists, Laura and Tim Moss, are behind another initiative that may be of interest to past, present and potential cycle tourists. Laura is organising the Festival of Cycle Touring, which will be held in Clitheroe, Lancashire on the weekend of May 1-3. (In a happy coincidence, the festival begins three days after we fly back to the UK. We’re currently planning to head north to the event and then cycle back to London.) Details are scant at present, but the festival website will doubtless soon fill in the blanks.
